The Legal Risks Leaders Can't Ignore
A quick, honest disclaimer to open: this course makes you a smarter, safer leader who knows where the landmines are and when to get help — it is not legal advice, and it doesn't replace your lawyer or compliance officer. With that set, let's map the terrain, because "I didn't realize AI created a legal obligation" is not a defense anyone wants to give.
The main areas where AI use meets the law:

Data privacy. The big one. Feeding personal data into AI tools can violate privacy laws — GDPR (Europe), CCPA/CPRA (California), and a growing list of others. These carry real teeth: significant fines and mandatory breach disclosure. If your AI use touches personal data, privacy law is in play, full stop.

Confidentiality and IP. Putting confidential or proprietary information into a third-party AI tool can breach NDAs, client contracts, or trade-secret protections. There are also open questions about who owns AI-generated output and whether it can infringe others' copyright. Assume nothing is settled here.

Sector-specific regulation. HIPAA (health), financial regulations, legal privilege, and other industry rules often govern how data can be handled — and generic AI tools are not automatically compliant with any of them. Your industry's existing rules apply to AI too.

Emerging AI-specific law. New regulation is arriving — the EU AI Act is the furthest along, with risk-based obligations and real penalties, and other jurisdictions are moving. This landscape is shifting fast; what's permitted today may be regulated tomorrow.
The leader's job here isn't to be a lawyer — it's to know enough to recognize when AI use enters legally sensitive territory and to stop and get proper advice before proceeding. Spotting the risk is the skill; resolving it is the professional's job.
